Kindergarten Skills Group

We will be offering a group therapy program specifically for children as they transition to Kindergarten, starting on September 8th, 2020. This program will run on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4:00-5:30pm with an add on session on Saturdays from 12:30-2:00.

What is the Kindergarten Skills Group?

  • It is a specialized program to meet the unique needs of children and families as they transition to Kindergarten

  • It will focus on teaching social, communication, and academic goals

  • There will also be 3 transition preparation meetings between UP service providers and your family to plan a smooth transition

How is this program different from other programs at UP?

  • It will incorporate ABA approaches that better meet the needs of older children while continuing to still present a natural and play-based approach to intervention

  • It will be less intensive to allow families more room in their Autism Funding budget to transition to other service providers over the course of the school year

What is the program structure?

  • A group format, with up to 4-8 children and 2-3 staff members

  • Sessions will be led by an UP Case Manager with support from 1-2 Behaviour Interventionists

Are there any pre-requisites?

  • Children will need to meet UP Clinic Group Readiness pre-requisite skills that are determined during an initial assessment

Will my child still receive individual services?

  • Yes, there will be 6-8 individualized goals in skill areas that are essential for success in Kindergarten.

  • These goals will be programmed specifically for your child and taught each session. Goals will be updated and reviewed approximately every 3 months but will be updated on-going as needed.

  • 1 hour per month of Senior Behavior Analyst time as well as 0.5 hour per month of Speech-Language Pathologist time will be provided per child, in addition to our very capable Case Managers who will be running the program.

  • The program includes 3, 1-hour parent meetings with the Senior Behavior Analyst to discuss child progress and provide resources for a smooth transition
